What Is It About Turning 60?

A friend recently confessed that she felt “gobsmacked” by disturbing feelings when she turned 60. Despite a successful continuing career as an attorney, she felt unsettled and unsatisfied with her life. With grown children living independent lives and a husband still fully engaged in his career and volunteer work, she needed a new way to define her purpose and role in the world.

My friend is not alone. There is something about reaching the 60 milestone that pulls many of us up short. For those who delayed parenting into our 30s, this may be when our children are truly “launched” and don’t need us as much. Others may be facing physical changes, forceful reminders that time really is marching on.

So what do we do?  Some people ignore it and power through, hoping the feelings will pass. Others get a dog or cat, which can be sources of purpose and comfort. But it may also be helpful to take some time to reflect on the values that mean the most to you. Where is your life in relation to those values? How can you reflect them more fully?

My friend worked with a personal coach who helped her identify the values she is passionate about. She has just found a volunteer activity where her skills and expertise can help support those values. She feels energized and useful.

If you would like to explore how coaching can help you find more satisfaction and meaning, I look forward to hearing from you.
